Enable HTTP (not HTTPS) API calls to force.com
The force.com API documentation mentions logging in over http, but this initially failed for me.  I got an error that my username/password was incorrect.  However the exact same URL and credentials worked fine as long as it was https.  After beating my head against it for a while I discovered it is controlled by a security setting in the force.com org. By default, force.com requires HTTPS...

Prototyping with JRuby
The Java snippet below came from some vendor training we did recently.  Although it’s just training code I thought it would be interesting to compare how the same thing could be done in (J)Ruby. The most obvious difference is the verbosity - and so the overall length - of the Java code.  There is a lot redundancy here and unfortunately the interfaces do not lend themselves to factoring it...

One problem all new web applications have is managing identities.  Users need the ability to sign up and they need somewhere to login.  And with all the other sites competing for their attention, you can bet they’ll need a way to recover their password (and probably their user id) when they forget it. For most applications this is just plumbing that distracts from creating the good bits. ...
