Step into my office
Our family is growing and the house is starting to get a little cramped - particularly the bedroom situation. We have 3 bedrooms but right now one of them is setup as an office + junk storage area. With another baby on the way we really need that bedroom back, as a guest room in the short term and then as the nursery.
We don’t have a lot of other areas in the house to accommodate my office, so what to do? We considered moving but that sounds like a royal pain in the arse. We’ve moved twice in the last 16 months, once internationally, and the memory is way too fresh.
Expanding the current house is an option but expensive and we already have a long list of home improvement projects. Not to mention the hassle/expense/frustration of dealing with the city to expand the house’s footprint.
Enter the garden office. A concept that appears popular mostly in the UK, a garden office is simply a building in the yard used as a home office. Usually it is a glorified shed; either a refurbished existing shed or purpose built. One big benefit is that if sized appropriately no building permit is required. Another is the cost is relatively cheap compared to extending the house.
So we’re planning a garden office. I plan posting our progress on tumblr to chronicle the experience.
